NHSOB 2nds took the game to their rivals right from the start. Glen Stroud captained the team and chose to go against the conditions during the first half. The game plan was simple - keep the ball close to the forwards and wear the opposition down. Ryan Smith playing a pivotal role here as scrum half with youngster Gareth Ronayne playing at N0. 10 for the first time at senior level. The forwards were outstanding in both the tight play and the loose. The front row of Paul Kelleher, Billy Halls and Peter Bradley giving their opposite numbers a torrid time. The introduction of Justin Watson soon after half time meant that that area of competition was soon to be over as the referee decided that he had seen enough and enforced 'uncontested scrums'. Glen Stroud and Nathan Fox Smith alongside Neil Bradley (playing his final game for the club) ran at the opposition all day and made great inroads into the Malpas half. This allowed the backs to function on the front foot with 'old-stager Geraint Bowden creating havoc in the opposition backline and scoring a great individual try. Ryan Smith also joined in and scored 2 good try's after the forwards had again laid the foundations, he also kicked 3 difficult conversions and must surely be knocking on the door for the 1st XV. All in all it was a fantastic team performance with both old and young players combining well. We must not forget that Malpas also played their part in a fine game of rugby - both teams will be looking forward to the league meeting in early December. |
