Caldicot v NHSOB (Pre-Season Friendly)

Caldicot RFC V Newport High School Old Boys RFC

Both Clubs played on Saturday afternoon at Caldicot in a pre season friendly. Both teams played a mix of 1st and 2nd team players. They play three 30mins to allow all the players who turned out to get some pre season practice. NHSOB dominated play right from the start. Although the game, was by no means a one sided affair. Caldicot took the play to NHSOB but were unlucky and appeared to lack finish and the clinical

Try scorers against Gareth Cooke x 2 Scot Williams and John Davies.

NHSOBS 1st coach was pleasing to see Jon Davies return to club after university and he said Jon looked a class act. He said the youth team scrum half Scott Williams who played in one of his 1st matches with senior players looks to have a massive potential. Watching from the side the spectators admitted that he stood out, showing speed agility and flair that reminded them of Gareth Edwards. Scott is certainly a player with potential.

NHSOB second rows Jim Cunningham and farmer Thomas could be the described as the best in the division especially when backed up by ever green Keith Clarke

The 1st team coach Nick Parkes said was pleasing to see so many of second team players  turn out in this trial and bodes well for Pat Brunnocks as the 2nds team second team next season.

The back row of Lee Blunt Martin Williams and Gareth Cooke blend well and forged a great unit and the young front rowers Dan Campbell and Andy Gallivan showed up well supported by

The player known as dad as he don’t like to like his age or name mentioned. This is a pity because he actually made a significant contribution to the game.

The half backs of Edwards Harris and Williams got the back line working well and centres Hillier Clemence Hanley and Davies thrived on the plentiful ball from the forwards. The team coaches Dia Smith, Nick Parkes, and A. Peacock were well pleased with the results. They also welcomed back

Of outstanding Tom Diggle to the team

There was no doubt in everyone’s mind that the Caldicot players provided a fantastic opposition and certainly challenged NHSOB throughout the game but poor communication and a lack of clinical finish allowed NHSOB to take advantage of the opportunities on offer. Sadly one of the Caldicot players received a knock on the head in the closing minute which left him with a cut on the side off the head. A sad and regretful ending to an excellent display of rugby
