Chepstow 15 NHSOB 25

Scorers: Tries: Rhys Davies (2), Rhys Hunt, Harry Blakemore, Lewis Johnson.

Difficult playing conditions didn’t help the quality of rugby in a hotly contested match at Chepstow. From the initial kick off both team struggled for control and possession of the ball, an abundance of handling errors saw a series of early scrums. Rhys Davies, back from a long spell out through injury, opened the scoring for NHSOB capitalising on a good break, his supporting run paying dividends as he piled over in the corner.

Chepstow came right back at NHSOB with a great display of tactical kicking only to see no repayment for their effort. Joseph Franklin smuggled the ball past the ranks of Chepstow players before eventually being hauled down on half way, good clearing from NHSOB saw Lewis Johnson break before feeding Cai Hale and at the breakdown Rhys Davies in support broke again to place the ball in the corner.

Needing a quick reply Chepstow put the pressure straight back on NHSOB from the kick off and from the resulting scrum collected their first score as from the breakdown Chepstow’s hooker broke free to touch down. The reply was again swift from the kick off as Chepstow knocked the ball forward from the low bobbling start kick. Rhys Hunt pealed from the breakdown after the resulting scrum to power his way beneath the posts to maintain his good run of scoring. Chepstow struck back just before half time to make the score 10-15 to the visitors at the break.

A lapse in concentration from NHSOB saw Chepstow immediately even the scores, firstly conceding a penalty deep in their half and then slow to react allowed Chepstow in for another try from a virtually uncontested quick tap. Despite the early set back NHSOB continued to apply pressure and gained territory as they began to gain the upper hand. Wing Rhys Harris returned a poor clearance kick with interest before being forced into touch, NHSOB stole the resulting line out before releasing Harry Blakemore to slither to the line.

Sensing victory was in their grasp made for a nervy finish to the match for NHSOB, but it was a try from Lewis Johnson that settled the nerves and the match. Final Score Chepstow 15 NHSOB 25.

Match Comments:

After an immaculately kept minute of silence to mark Remembrance Sunday battle commenced at Yew Tree Lane. The opening quarter of the game was dominated by Caldicot’s pack as they took advantage of a slow start from NHSOB. NHSOB stood resolute and weathered the initial battering with some excellent last ditch defending. Caldicot were unlucky not to convert their pressure on a couple of occasions due to small handling errors.

It was NHSOB who took first blood though as against the run of play and helped by a series of infringements at the breakdown found themselves 5 metres from Caldicot’s line. Rhys Hunt eventually found a gap in Caldicot’s line to bag the first of a brace of tries.

The contest resumed as both teams strove for superiority through the forwards, for most of the second quarter the ball remained in the midfield with neither team gaining the upper hand. As half time approached NHSOB gifted a chance for Caldicot through two successive penalties, Caldicot’s James Hussey blasting through a couple of limp challenges after a quick tap, then blazed his conversion wide to leave the scores even at 5 each at the interval.

In a mirror to the first half it was NHSOB that took the game to Caldicot but failed to find the final ball to take the advantage. It was Caldicot however that did take the advantage with ten minutes to go, as impressive No. 8 James Hussey speared through NHSOB’s line on half way and cantered in before converting his own try. NHSOB continued as they had started the second half and made inroads into Caldicot’s territory and after many phases of play mauled their way over the line, Rhys Hunt emerging from the pile with ball in hand. Jack Thomas banged the ball between the posts to tie the scores and set up a grand stand finish.

With little time remaining NHSOB continued to apply pressure and gained territory quickly, but the clock ran down and the game finished with honours even, justice was served as neither side deserved to lose a fair and hard fought match that was played in the true spirit of the game.

A real team performance from NHSOB who through real hard graft are gaining confidence.

nhsob RFC under 13 v St Joesphs RFC Under 13

Final score: St Josephs RFC U13s 24   NHSOB RFC U13s 17

Scorers: Tries: Ryan Chere, Ben Watts, Rhys Harris

Conversion: Jack Thomas

Match  Comments:

Despite early pressure NHSOB let St Joseph’s in for an uncontested try due to some slack tackling. The tackling didn’t improve as St Joseph’s time and again made breaks though a porous NHSOB defence. Facing a deficit of 17 points and half time looming fast NHSOB capitalised on a series of infringements by St Joseph’s, Ryan Chere sniping around the fringes to outpace St Joseph’s defenders to the line and set up an easy conversion for Jack Thomas.

Boosted by the last gasp efforts of the first half NHSOB sought to reduce St Joseph’s advantage, but indiscipline cost them territory and eventually points as St Joseph’s crossed again to extend their lead. A period of frustration for NHSOB ensued as despite maintaining control of the ball and territory, infringements saw them pegged back in their own half. Undeterred NHSOB maintained their effort, the forwards finding momentum in their rucking and clearing, providing clean ball for the half backs to get the ball moving. After battering St Joseph’s defensive line over several phases of play Ben Watts finally broke through to score. An injection of belief through the NHSOB side saw them again make inroads into St Joseph’s territory and forwards and backs interacted brilliantly to find Rhys Harris some space on the wing, whom with a fair bit of work to do, finished his jinking run with a stretch for the line.

NHSOB pressed to take advantage of their ascendancy, whilst at the same time were vulnerable to the counter attack and with chances to seal the game for both sides going begging the score closed at 24-17. NHSOB can come away with the satisfaction of a much more committed team performance than recent weeks as they build for next week’s fixture.
