(Ashley heads for the line against the Cornish All Blacks On Tour May 2009 for NHSOB under 11s

NHSOB RFC have a full mini and junior structure. There are teams from under eight to under 12 which form the MINI Section at the Club. These teams all train on a Saturday morning between the hours of 10am and 12pm from September to end of may each year.
The Mini Section has a full range of teams each supported by a Team Manager and qualified coaches and all have designated referees who hold a permit to referee the game. All of whom are CRB checked and registered with the WRU. All coaches and referees are trained to WRU standards and train in line with the Mini Junior Rugby Pathway published by the WRU. They and the club operate to a code of conduct and apply the laws of the game as they apply to each age group. This is to ensure safety and development of skills related to the physical and mental development of the children. The age is based on the school year eg under nines would be in year 4 at school.

The Mini Structure at NHSOB is a comprehensive one were all children play within the age group and they do not normally play up an age. The club welcomes both boys and girls to the mini section and they will both play in the same team based on the age of the child. In most cases the manager and coaches follow the children through each age group and this provides continuity for the children.

In addition to Saturday training matches are played on Sunday mornings throughout South East Wales. There are several one day tournaments which are very enjoyable days out for all the family. NHSOB also takes all of the mini section on tour every year and in previous years have toured West Wales, Devon and Cornwall. Again this is open to all the families of the children. This has become a popular event in both the playing and social aspects of the club.

The Mini Section Song which is traditionally sang in a circle after each match a must to learn for all new players
Who are who are, who are we?
We are NHSOB,
We dont squabble we dont fight,
We get drunk on a Saturday night.
The club also supports a full junior structure with teams for the boys from under 13 to under 17. these teams all have their own management and coaches and in most cases have progressed through from the mini section. Although new players can join the team directly by attending training sessions. There is also a full youth structure and a senior squad making it possible for players to start at the mini level and continue to the senior side as a player. We also have a full under 14 and under 17 girls teams. These continue to grow and play at the club and travel to play in both England and Wales.
We are commited as the biggest community club to the development of rugby skills and the love of the game for all members of the community. To this end we now have a rugby section for adults and children with special needs. These players train on Saturdays between 12 and 1pm. This section will for the first time take part in the mini section tour in 2009. The club was recognised by the City of Newport as the best Sports Club in the city in 2009.

Many of todays players started as mini team members. There are many options for players as the club supports all players to play at the highest level based on their individual ability. There are several old boys playing for clubs such as Newport RFC, Gwent Dragons and we have had a fair share of international players who started their rugby training at NHSOB. Players such as Alix Popham, Ashely Smith and Jamie Corsi all started play at NHSOB.

Mini and Junior Rugby Fun Camp a Massive
Success
NHSOB held a two day rugby camp during the February have term Day one was aimed at 7-11 year old. It was great to see 45 young people turn up for this event. There were several from new players not connected with the club and this was great to see. They players were introduced to a range of coaching exercises linked to the age and experience and abilities. The players who were not connected to the club prior to this day were quick to settle and soon got to know the other club members. Many thanks to Mike Pugsley and Kay Bird for putting these days together. Thanks to all the coaches who turned out to support the Mike and make the days work.
Day One was very successful despite the cold and wet weather everyone had a really good day. Although for some the highlight of the day was the hot soup and drinking chocolate put on by Kay to ensure that they were truly warmed up before going out after lunch.
day two started well woth over 50 11-17 year olds. This included a large number of girls who are members of NHSOB Girls teams of which there are two all girl teams. They were less lucky with the weather as the rain turned to snow. They did however get a mornings training in and all appeared to have a great time despite the weather. Many of them wanting to continue in the snow but the second session had to be called off.
